Atmosphere, the longstanding hip-hop duo, has released a music video from a brand new track. The song, titled “Specificity”, was just put on Youtube on Wednesday morning alongside its eerie new music video. The music video is incredibly politically charged, attempting to make a statement on the turmoil in the political world today. The track comes as the group is just finishing up their recent tour in support of their 2018 album, Mi Vida Local, meaning the duo is showing no signs of taking a break soon. Atmosphere has been incredibly consistent in recent years, constantly putting out new music and expanding their discography.
Atmosphere began in Minnesota in the late 1990s, a project by rapper Slug and producer Ant. The duo’s real names are Sean Daley and Anthony Davis, respectively. The two have been together for over two decades at this point and have released nine full studio albums. The duo had their most commercial success with their 2008 album When Life Gives You Lemons, You Paint That Shit Gold, which reached number 5 on the Billboard albums chart. The album was powered by the hit tracks “Yesterday” and “You,” some of the duo’s most popular songs to date. With this new song, “Specificity,” the duo pursues a darker mood than some of their previous work, attempting to tackle a more serious topic than usual.
The music video for “Specificity” takes a look at the unrest in American society right now surrounding politics, giving Atmosphere’s take on the issue. The video mainly consists of Slug from up close rapping the track mixed with shots of Slug walking through crowds in the streets. The crowds are full of protestors and at certain points Slug is even walking in the midst of crowds of riot police there to restore order. Atmosphere is strongly focusing on the real scenes and the chaos surrounding all the protests and events in America in recent years.
