Joshua & The Holy Rollers are an up-and-coming rock & roll band based in Los Angeles building a substantial fanbase on the back of standalone singles and a recently-released EP called Tribulations. Today, we’re premiering the band’s latest video and song, “Talks Like Alabama” a stomping blues-rocker with crunching guitars and lead singer Mac Hanson’s soulfully twangy vocals.
The video is a fairly simplistic affair, featuring the four band members alone in their old ’80s convertible coupe next to a boarded-up, abandoned home in the desert. The band drives up next to the home where the old car breaks down, refusing to start after several attempts. Instead of letting their bad fortune get the best of them, Hanson leads the other three band members in a whiskey-fueled hootenanny. At first the group of men are subdued, singing along with the lyrics “I can’t hear a word she says / But she talks like Alabama.” Their spirits start to take a turn when a bottle of Bulleit is busted out, with the musicians taking turns swigging from the half-empty jug.
At this point Hanson’s fired up, turning in his seat to face his friends in the back, singing the song with even more enthusiasm (and with his long hair, stocky build and exuberant expressions, resembles a young Jack Black). The rest of the band gets in on the action, completing a call and response with Hanson as they sing “I’m gonna take that woman / I’m gonna take that woman / I’m gonna take that woman / Gonna take / Gonna take her home with me tonight.”
If it wasn’t obvious from his vocals, Hanson hails from Oklahoma. He’s joined in Joshua & The Holy Rollers by bandmates (and fellow Southerners) Logan Baudean, Alex Moore and Joey Larosa. The band plans to have a full-length album out later this year and while they don’t currently have any shows announced, they’re in the midst of booking a national tour.
