Pixx – Small Mercies

The young musical prodigy continues to impress with her sophomore album

Hannah Rodgers’ follow up album to 2017s The Age Of Anxiety comes at a prevalent time in society. Small Mercies explores environmental destruction, religious endeavors and more. The young artist takes on unique personas throughout each one of the tracks to create a refreshing take on the overlying themes of the album. The sophomore album from Rodgers is as eclectic and diverse and one can get. By switching through personalities and perspectives, the London based artist is showing her talent more than ever.

Throughout the tracks, Rodgers’ sensitivity and creativity flow through each lyric like silk.
Album opener “Andean Condor” is a rhythmic reminder from the 23-year-old to not grow up too quickly and flips the script on a guy she is interested in. The quirky mix of beats and offbeat noises will keep the listener guessing from start to finish. The album takes a sharp stab at the heart with “Bitch,” a track filled to the brim with punk-like melodies. Standouts like “Funsize” and “Mary Magdalene” both take turns flipping the album on its head. Whether gritty guitar solos or synth-driven beats, Rodgers’ becomes the best version of her musical self.

Title track “Small Mercies” is a hectic 3 minutes and 30 seconds of pure adrenaline. Along with a playful attitude and a new zest for life, themes of sadness and fear can be found throughout the album as well. Tracks like “Hysterical” and “Disgrace” take turns to push electric guitar riffs, keys and lyrics that are not only relatable but unique.

The album comes to a close with track “Blowfish.” A tune littered with vulnerability and sincerity. Rodgers’ sings lyrics like, “I still get nervous to open the curtains” to let her listener know that her ego is still titering on the edge of a cliff. By pushing every boundary that might have been in her way before, Rodgers’ has made it crystal clear that she is not afraid to start this new chapter in her musical career. Small Mercies is filled with little glimmers of musical genius from start to finish.
