Singer-songwriter Fay Wolf is back with a new song and video for her tenderly delicate new song “These Kids” and we’re so excited to premiere it. While Wolf sings slightly-abstract lyrics over a simple piano riff, the montage-style video shows clips of families, children playing and other various street scenes. The subjects of the video are both black and white, which is an intentional choice made to reflect Wolf’s bi-racial background as she considers her own identity on the journey towards becoming a mother.
Understanding that “These Kids” is a song about making the decision to have children adds some color to lyrics like “what’ll it all come down to when I’m all bathed / what’ll it all come down to when I’m all laid down / what’ll it all come down to cuz I’m afraid of you / what’ll it all come down to cuz we all fade out in silence.” This is the first time that Wolf has ventured into this subject matter.
“I was never sure I wanted kids,” said Wolf. “I figured if I did, that I didn’t need to stress about it–that I’d simply wake up one day and know for sure, one way or another. And that’s pretty much what happened. This song is about all the introspection that naturally came before the day that I woke up and knew. The decision to have children can be a complex one. Our ancestors are a part of it, our hometowns are a part of it, our legacies are a part of it. What deeper connections will benefit us all–in the present and future? What rewards will outweigh risks? What will it feel like? But after all the introspection, what–ultimately–does our heart/gut say? Because maybe it’s a simple decision after all. These Kids starts and ends with the lyrics “I care, my heir.” And I guess there’s my answer.”
The song was produced by her frequent collaborater Rob Kleiner, who worked with her on “Further.” You can catch her live at the Bootleg Theater in Los Angeles on June 10th as she performs as part of Adam Levy & Anna Vogelzang’s Salon Residency.
