The American multi-instrumentalist Ty Segall is due to come out with a new album called First Taste. The album will be out on August 2nd of this year via Drag City. Additionally, Segall released a new video for his first single off the album “Taste.” Segall will also be performing in various places including locations in LA, NYC, and Europe later on in the year with the Freedom Band in order to promote the album.
Gore, Violence, and studded jeans litter the “Taste” music video. It’s full of repetitive patterns and indie shots as the camera frequently zooms in to get close shots of faces and objects, including a fresh pair of shoes. Colorful and psychedelic editing enhance the video and add to an underlying confusion. Throughout the video, Ty Segall himself is seen going on a murdering spree, killing off various people. Strangely enough, it seems that Segall wins a trophy for his escapades. Upon receiving his award the shot freezes and, once again, the camera zooms in on his face. The final part of the video features a few sentences which read, “All members of The Freedom Band were murdered during the making of this video. Except for Ben.” Check out the video below:
Ty Segall is aiming to cross traditional barriers with First Taste. He’s planning on using a multitude of underrepresented instruments including koto, recorder, bouzouki, harmonizer, mandolin, saxophones and brass, voices, and keyboard. Segall jumps in throughout the album with drum fills wherever he can fit them in. The album will have various kinds of songs from full on metal songs to soft ballads. Additionally, Segall explained that he will be focusing on a number of themes throughout like family, re-encountering pasts, anticipating futures, oneness, self-esteem, and childhood.
