Amanda Palmer recently joined abortion rights activists in a rally outside of Missouri’s Governors Office Thursday afternoon. The rally began at The Gateway Arch in St. Louis and proceeded on to Wainwright State Office Building where governor Mike Parson office is located.
According to Patch.com, Palmer also performed at the rally, performing “In My Mind” for the protestors and spoke about the song’s theme. “If it feels like it’s too little, too late, it doesn’t matter. All that matters is what we do right now,” Palmer said. She continued to discuss the challenging journey of her own abortions. She stated “I’m doing it because I can. I’m doing it because my family is not going to disown me. I’m doing it because my awesome feminist husband is like, wow, this is really awkward and uncomfortable … I’m so proud of you.” Palmer left prior to protestors marching to the Governor’s office.
When protestors arrived at the office, they gained entrance to the lobby, blocking elevators and daring police to arrest them. More gathered in the building’s courtyard, carrying signs and giving speeches with bullhorns from a low brick wall that became an impromptu stage. In result, at least a dozen activists were arrested.
Just last week, Parson signed a bill banning abortions. The Missouri Stands for the Unborn Act states that abortions after eight weeks, before many women know they’re pregnant, will threaten anyone who performs the procedure with up to 15 years in prison. There are no exceptions for rape or incest.
Palmer recently performed in Los Angeles, CA, reminding the audience that Atlanta’s governor Brian Kemp, signed a similar bill. It effectively bans abortion after six weeks of pregnancy, when doctors can usually start detecting a fetal heartbeat.
