Juliana Hatfield Releases Subversive New Video For “Broken Doll”

Julian Hatfield is living wild and free as a bunny suitable for the Playboy mansion in the new visuals for “Broken Doll”. Her Adult Swim-esque opening for the video is about as self-explanatory as the title of her new project: “The album is Weird.” In the music video, Julian plays a bunny that’s living on a farm and struggling with keeping her tail in place while chasing the dog around and stealing carrots out of the garden. This video is off-the-wall and strange but when comparing it to the constant themes of isolation through her latest project, it is fitting for the world the 51-year-old singer sees herself living in. In a recent interview with Stereogum, Hatfield noted that she was inspired to make an album centralizing around her being secluded from the world because she felt like she was being “cut-off from other people, from my feelings, from technology, from popular culture.” The eleven-track album is nothing short of a detailed observation showing what it’s like to view the world from the perspective of someone who’s completely kept their own worlds tucked away from anyone else attempting to a find a way inside.

The music video for the single comes four months after the release of Hatfield’s self-produced album Weird. Read our review on the Boston-based singer’s latest project here

Kalen Murphy: I was raised across the world so I cannot be grounded to a genre knowing that music is the universal language that makes us move as one. Sometimes I'm Tyler, The Creator with a hint of Donald Glover, other days I can be Tame Impala with a splash of Sylvan Esso. If you're someone that can see colors while listening to a song like me, cheers because we're the last of a dying breed.
