Billboard Magazine has been the prominent figure of providing charts based on the success of album and single sales for various genres of music. From the looks of it, Rolling Stone Magazine may be following in Billboard’s footsteps. The magazine has announced that they will be launching their own music chart, starting May 13.
Founder, Chairman, and CEO of PMC Jay Penske spoke about the new venture in a press release, saying “PMC’s strategy is to constantly evolve our brands and products across media platforms. What’s imperative and exciting about our new Rolling Stone Charts is that it will present a transparent, granular and real-time quantification to accurately reflect listeners’ evolving interests and give insight into worldwide trends.”
The first wave of charts will include the Rolling Stone Top 100 Songs, Rolling Stone Top 200 Albums, Rolling Stone Artist 500, Rolling Stone Trending 25, and Rolling Stone Breakthrough 25. The charts will incorporate digital and physical sales and streaming activity from the United States.
Rolling Stone has been known for their album reviews, giving a handful of artists a 5-star review, which is seen as a major accomplishment in ones music career. As Billboard has expanded to its own music awards show, it will stand the test of time to see if Rolling Stone follow that same path.
