Since teasing their new song, Cult of Luna has come through on their promise and released The Silent Man. It will be a good segue into their 2019 Summer Europe tour where they will be performing in Norway, France, and Germany. The Silent Man will also be included in their upcoming album, set to be released in the Fall. This is the first we’ve heard since they last released music in 2013, Vertikal and Vertikal II, as well as their collaboration with Julie Christmas on the 2018 Mariner album.
Based on the thirty minute teaser of The Silent Man, which read “Silence came crawling. There is a man at the door. In the absence of light, we merge with our shadows. Rise and ride my friend. Together we’ll bring on the end.” It could be speculated that there is a story behind The Silent Man and that Cult of Luna wants to put listeners in a certain frame of mind to capture the meaning of the song.
Contrary to the name, the lead singer can be heard on the new track, coming in after a minute of low, drone like instrumentals that are characteristic of its doom metal influences. Mid way into The Silent Man, it breaks into an interesting bridge that gives relief to the heavier beginning, where the guitar melody can be heard, before going all in again at the chorus. Cult of Luna has been known to include sections of light and dark into their music, which have given them many comparisons to other bands such as Isis, with whom they have toured with.
