Rhye Releases New Song “Needed” and Announces New Piano Project “Spirit”

Canadian singer and producer Mike Milosh has worn many different hats and flirted with numerous genres from classical, to electronic as Milosh all the way to R&B with his most prominent project Rhye. This time, he is pursuing an entirely piano based project with his upcoming EP Spirit, and has released a new track entitled “Needed,” which will be featured on the upcoming project.

“These are songs about love in my life, but also about the love for piano brought back into my life,” Milosh said in a press release. Milosh is a talented multi-instrumentalist, having learned cello at age 3, and eventually venturing into vocals and keys later on in life.

“Needed,” was co-written by Dan Wilson of Semisonic, and hosts a down-tempo vibe complimented by Milosh’s excellent vocal work. The backing piano has classical influences at the beginning, which continues throughout the song, however the track’s bass and beat give it a more modern twist, hosting a lounge vibe.

Milosh began his solo career in 2004,with the release of his first album You Make Me Feel. In the early 2010s Milosh teamed up with Danish producer Robin Hannibal, who released their  first joint album together as Rhye entitled Woman in 2013.

Although Hannibal left the project in 2017, Milosh continued making music as Rhye and dropped the project’s sophomore album Blood. Lyrically the project’s title and lyrical content were rooted in his recent divorce from former actress Alexa Nikolas , in addition to the departure of Hannibal from the developing musical project.

Although Milosh is the visionary behind all of Rhye’s releases as of now, he remains a frequent collaborator which was displayed with the Blood Remix album that was released last November. Milosh explained that his desire to collaborate matches his visions for each track, and all hold one part of his vision.

“It comes very naturally, the people that are already involved with me musically are musicians that I tend to gravitate more towards when collaborating,” Milosh explained in an interview with Wonderland Magazine.” Every song on Blood is personal and unique, so I try to capture that experience sonically with the people that I’m working with.”

For the remix project Milosh chose from a variety of artists who he felt could interpret his work best, whether they were close acquaintances of his or other musicians. Like Blood, each track off the remix project is unique but features a sound that is unique to the artist remixing the work.

“Most of the songs start on piano and keyboard and evolve from there,” Milosh continued in the interview. “For the remix record, Blood Remixed, we chose artists that we felt would have something unique to add to the Blood songs; a perspective of their own. Some of them are friends, and some are people I didn’t know but whose work we respect.”

The upcoming Spirit EP will also feature further Milosh collaborations, with Ólafur Arnalds and Doveman’s Thomas Bartlett both being featured on the project. Spirit will be released on May 10 off Loma Vista Records.
