Trixie Whitley Releases New Video for “May Cannan”

Alt rock artist, Trixie Whitley, daughter of blues rock performer Chris Whitley, has released a music video for “May Cannan.” The song is one of Whitley’s hits from her album Lacuna, which came out in January 2019. The black and white video features high contrast shots of Whitley dancing with the help of backup dancers, broken up by clips of the songstress singing to the audience through the camera. In an interview with Billboard, Whitley explained, “I always dance and I love dancing, and I think that has to do with why drums were my first instrument and such a natural instrument to me, because dance is so much about rhythm….It’s kind of the language of your body — at least that’s how I perceived it. I just think time and how you feel time is a very personal and very physical thing in itself. It’s probably one of my strengths throughout any vehicle I express myself through.” Whitley goes on the explain that the album is a meditation on human nature and the relationships within it.

Whitley began her album tour throughout Europe in April and will come back to the U.S. to continue the tour in June. The singer began her career singing with her father and has since released six albums of her own over the past decade. The music video for “May Cannan” is part of the Lacuna trilogy, a group of videos for songs from the album, also including “Touch” and “Long Time Coming.”

The videos were part of a collaboration with Hannah Marshall, who’s worked with artists like Florence + the Machine, Goldfrapp and the XX. They were filmed in London in only two days. The trilogy maintains high contrast black and white shots throughout and carries on the theme of the human experience that is found in “May Cannan.” Whitley plans to use projections of the videos during her shows and will be creating a more unique experience than her past shows, with her even playing instruments live. Both her videos and music are part of the artistry that Whitley is bringing to her new tour, which is a can’t-miss for those that are deeply invested in the beauty of her art direction. In Whitney’s words, “I feel like I’m incorporating all of what I am into the live show, so it’s exciting.”
