Savages, a rock band from London stopped making music after 2016 and has left members like Jehnny Beth to find a different musical path. After Beth’s work with the Savages, she has worked with the Gorillaz and Trentemøller. The French singer-songwriter is now taking up film scoring and has teamed up with the Savages’s producer, Johnny Hostile to help score for a new documentary about Chelsea Manning. Jehnny Beth and Johnny Hostile both helped contribute to the film’s soundtrack and just released their song “Let it Out”. The single has a soft techno vibe and upbeat tempo. It is dramatic, chaotic and calm all at once. Beth’s voice is enchanting and sounds like a whisper and a scream at the same time. It is beautifully composed and will be a hit once the documentary is released. Beth and Hostile referring to their new single, stated, “It is about being inside Chelsea’s head at the moment she decides she won’t be hiding anymore. It’s a great moment of human bravery that can inspire anyone in this world to go beyond their own fear and accept who they are no matter the consequences.”
The new documentary, XY Chelsea is about the activist, Chelsea Manning. It was released during the Tribeca Film Festival and will release to a wider audience on June 7th with Showtime. According to the Consequence of Sound, the filmmakers had to make changes to the film after its premiere due to recent updates surrounding Manning’s life. Chelsea Manning is a former U.S military officer who leaked information about the tragic events happening during the Afghanistan and Iraq wars. She was given a thirty-five-year sentence in 2010. In 2017, Obama commuted her sentence, but she was thrown back in prison when she refused to testify against Julian Assange. Manning is a transgender woman who started her transition in the prison system. Her story is powerful and will leave an impact on many audiences across the nation.
