South African hip-hop duo Die Antwoord are headlining a show at Pier 17 on Thursday, October 3rd as part of their ‘House of Zef’ North American Tour. This all ages event opens its doors at 6:30pm, with the show beginning an hour later at 7:30pm. Tickets are selling at $49.50 for General Admission and $204 apiece for VIP General Admission in the Heineken Green Zone.

Die Antwoord is made up of rappers Yolandi Visser and Ninja, who came together in 2008 to build the incredibly niche sound they continue to cultivate today. Over the past decade, they have built a huge cult following through the relatability of their lyrics and their overall image, inspired by the South African counter-culture movement known as ‘zef.’ According to the group, ‘zef’ describes the culture as “poor [and] fancy, modern and trashy.”

Regardless of image, Die Antwoord’s music is an impressive, thoughtful commentary of this culture and how it fits into today’s current society. Their style is absolutely unlike anything else  seen in rap or hip-hop today, and certainly worth giving a listen if you’re looking to expand your musical horizons. You might be a little shocked at first, but you surely will not be disappointed.

Melissa Aiello: Hi there, nice to meet you! My name is Melissa and I am a 24-year-old passionate lover of all things related to music and live entertainment. I've been singing since the second grade, and playing guitar for the past five years. I grew up in a fairly musical household, with my grandfather breaking out his accordion and starting sing-a-longs at every family gathering. It was here that I began falling in love with music and its power to change moods, emotions, and lives. My taste in music goes far and wide - you name it, I'll (probably) listen to it. My hundreds of Spotify playlists include everything from Biggie to ABBA to the Jonas Brothers (thank GOD they're back together) to Dolly Parton and everything in-between. I aim for my little corner of the internet to spread love and positivity for all this beautiful music, and give you the opportunity to see or hear artists you may otherwise have not heard of.
