The badass punk rock group L7 finally released their music video for one of their newest songs “Stadium West.” The video, directed by Rob Sheridan, is very grunge to say the least and provides an awesome look into what their upcoming album Scatter the Rats will entail. The album is being released by Joan Jett’s Blackheart Records on May 3rd of this year and so far the band has released a few other singles including “Burn Baby” and “Fight the Crave.” L7 will be going on tour this spring throughout North America.
“Stadium West” to put it plainly is a cool song with an exciting and rebellious tone. Immediately, listeners are struck by the song as it starts right in the middle of the action with the guitar, drums, and bass all beginning loudly and in unison. Punchy dominant chords wail out within the first few measures making the song reminiscent of a typical 70s blues influenced rock anthem. “Stadium West” isn’t entirely dynamic as it starts on a high energy and ends with a high energy. Additionally, the song is quite predictable as the drums and guitar lay out repetitive straight rhythm lines that allow listeners to not miss a beat.
The music video for “Stadium West” is an interestingly tame take on traditional non-linear trippy videos. A journey between the members of L7 is depicted in a series of highly edited fragments as they assumedly head towards Stadium West. These fragments are perfectly aligned with the timing of the song as every measure or two the shots consistently change to a new scene with an all new style. Some shots show x-ray and thermal filters in black and white while others show duplicated colorful copies of the band members. Due to the versatility of shots in “Stadium West” it’s hard to stop watching as you wonder what will come next.
The new music video is consistent with the band’s unruly and disorienting style. It’s exciting to see the band musically pay homage to classic rock styles while putting their own unique mark on rock culture with their video. It will be intriguing to see what L7 has in store for the future.
