The much anticipated season 8 of Game of Thrones premiered earlier this week to exceptionally high ratings. The second episode, “A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms”, included performance from Florence + The Machine featuring a new song titled “Jenny of Oldstones”. With Florence + The Machine’s indie rock, folk style, there couldn’t be a better platform than Game of Thrones to showcase such a melancholy song. “Jenny of Oldstones” captures the tranquility of the bittersweet final season. The season 8 Game of Thrones soundtrack includes over 170 songs that capture the mood of every episode. Without leaving any of your favorites out, it features artists like Ellie Goulding, Maren Morris, Mumford & Sons, Mathew Bellamy, The Weeknd, James Arthur, The Lumineers, and Lennon Stella. A few tracks available now are “Power is Power” by SZA, Travis Scott, and The Weeknd, and “Kingdom of One” by Maren Morris. The official album release will be on April 26.
Podrick Payne, who is seen in the crowd during season 8 welcoming Jon and Daenery’s into Winterfell’s courtyard upon their arrival from the North, sings the song “Jenny of Oldstones”, after enticement from Tyrion for a song. Brienne of Tarth had just been knighted by Ser Jaime and as the end credits begin, Florence + The Machine share their own rendition of “Jenny of Oldstones”. According to The Hollywood Reporter, the song may foreshadow whats to come next. It is still unknown whether Jon Snow (Kit Harington) or Daenerys (Emilia Clarke) will end up ruling Westeros. Is “Jenny of Oldstones” teasing who will rule the Iron Throne? The song seems to reference the fall at Summerhall, intertwining love and death. Read the lyrics for yourself:

The Game of Thrones TV show is based on the series of books by Author George R. R. Martin. A Song of Ice and Fire is of the last two books left, which keep die hard readers out of the loop as to what the final resolve will be. Fans have been on this journey for 8 seasons now and its hard to come to terms with the closing of show so beloved by many. Although HBO has already confirmed five spin-offs of The Game of Thrones. George R. R. Martin has been quoted saying, “I don’t think it should be the final season. But here we are”. Even though its the end of an era for the show, Martin is still heavily involved in writing the books, who’s to say what the future will hold.
