Producer Flying Lotus has officially announced the release of his next full length album. Steven Ellison, who performs under the stage name Flying Lotus, has been making music professionally for over a decade now and is known for his incredibly unique creative style. Ellison’s newest project, titled Flamagra, will be his first full length album in five years. During this time, Ellison has worked on music for a variety of artists, including Kendrick Lamar and Thundercat. Flying Lotus also spent time working on various other creative pursuits, such as his independent films. Now that Ellison is back to releasing his own music, fans are eagerly awaiting Flamagra. The full album is set to debut on May 24.
The video released alongside the album announcement, for the track “Fire Is Coming,” is a prime example of Ellison’s strong artistic vision. The track itself is not a traditional song, but an interlude narrated by legendary filmmaker David Lynch. Simply choosing to release an interlude instead of a traditional single with the album announcement shows Ellison’s willingness to break away from the status quo. The tracklist of the album shows that it will have features from Denzel Curry, Anderson Paak and Tierra Whack, as well as many others.
One of the strangest and most compelling music videos I have ever seen, the video depicts a bunch of children dressed as dogs in a post apocalyptic world. The children are frantically running around and screaming until a siren goes off, prompting them to stop and sit down to face the front of the room. A dog slowly wheels into the room in a wheelchair, making monstrous noises until David Lynch face appears in the face of the dog. From there, Lynch proceeds to tell the kids a short story ending in what seems to be the apocalypse which left these kids here in the first place. Lynch tells the story of Tommy, a boy who is simply answering the phone before going outside and seeing the sky turning dark. While the track does not give fans much insight into the sound of the album, it tells a story that will most likely be pivotal to the themes of the project.
