Silversun Pickups Returns With New Album Widow’s Weeds Due Out June 2019 and Shares New Song “It Doesn’t Matter Why”

Silversun Pickup returns stronger than ever with their fifth studio album, Widow’s Weeds. The album, which is set to be an extroverted and open piece about rebirth and renewal, is set to come out June 7 via the group’s own New Machine Recordings label. Assisting in the production of their latest project is Butch Vig, who has past experience with Nirvana, Smashing Pumpkins and Sonic Youth. Additionally, the band shared the music video for “It Doesn’t Matter Why” which was directed by Suzie Vlcek.

About the album, lead singer Brian Aubert said: “This was the first album where we were open. We were exposed. I see how that can be scary to people, but for us we really thrived on that.”

Aubert, bassist Nikki Monninger, drummer Christopher Guanlao and keyboardist Joe Lester have all maintained their independence throughout their career. The first three albums released together came out on a local label, Dangerbird, before they founded their own label for their release of their last album, Better Nature. Starting in the early 2000s, they still remain a vital and important rock band that have picked up ten Top 20 Hits on Billboard’s Alternative Songs char in addition to over a million records sold in the US.

The band’s sonic density has always been a considerable source of pride and their four albums are an example of that. The upcoming album, Widow’s Weeds, is definitely no exception. The starting point, “Neon Wound” and the closer, “We Are Chameleons” were an easy agreement for the group. However, the group admitted that everything in between, including the sequencing for the rest of Widow’s Weeds, often surprised them. The main message ended up being about rebirth and renewal and for Aubert, moving forward meant staying connected to his own self and being attuned to creative impulses when they arise. He said about this matter, “If that means going outside of his comfort zone, so be it. This album feels the most naked out of all of them.”

Widow’s Weeds is available now for pre-order.
