This week, the original soundtrack for All About Eve, a stage adaptation of the Academy Award winning 1950 film, will be releasing via Invada Records and Lakeshore Records. The 12-track record is composed and produced by the multi-talented Polly Jean Harvey, or PJ Harvey, who has scored various soundtracks in theatre, film, and television throughout her career thus far. While we await the April 12 release of All About Eve’ssoundtrack, Harvey has provided us a glimpse of what is to come with the release of two songs, “Descending” and “The Moth.”
“Descending” is a purely instrumental track that features a hypnotic build up towards a climatic finish overpowered by some fierce drums. On a more mellowed note, “The Moth” is a beautifully arranged track that is empowered by the haunting vocals of Lily James. Have a listen to both tracks below.
Through its plot about an aging Broadway star who gets her career and life threatened by an ambitious fan, All About Eveis a work of brilliance that explores themes of ageism, feminism, and sexuality. From the two previews, one can expect Harvey’s upcoming project to be emotionally charged and evocative, and to certainly do the play (and movie) justice.
Speaking on the score, Harvey stated that she chose to collaborate with long-time collaborator James Johnston as he possesses a “soulfulness a sensitivity to his playing that inspires [her]. She also expressed her love for storytelling and explained how working instrumentally gave her a freedom “without the constraints of song form.”
Recently, Harvey and John Parish also released a new song titled “Sorry For Your Loss” that was a tribute to Mark Linkous, the late singer of Sparklehorse who tragically passed in 2010.
