The indie-folk singer Marissa Nadler and rock musician Stephen Brodsky have yet released their second single off their upcoming collaborative project, Droneflower, out on April 26th under Sacred Bones Records. The newly released track “Estranged” is a cover of a beloved Guns N’ Roses song, but with a new twist in tone.
The new track is full of moody folk vocals and ominous guitar chords that can’t help but give you the chills. The original song, off of Guns N’ Roses’ 1991 album Use Your Illusion II, was a high-end, animated ballad with screeching guitars; however, the duo’s cover is slow-moving, full of harmonies and a more moody tone in production.
Aside from working together on this new collaborative project, both artists have been working on separate projects of their own. In February, Nadler released two new tracks entitled “If We Make It Through The Summer” and “Poison” featuring John Cale. “Poison” is all about a dissolved marriage, featuring signature somber vocals; whereas, “If We Make It Through The Summer” is a more upbeat song, featuring a full band sound.
Brodsky, known for being a member of Cave In, teamed up with his fellow friend and musician Mike Law to create the band called New Idea Society, along with assistance from drummer Alan Cage of Quicksand and Brian Cook of Botch. With the announcement of the newly formed band, they released two tracks called “Now Is Here” and “Wave Goodbye” in February.
