Alternative rockers Cage the Elephant have just released a reggae-tinged track, featuring Beck, entitled “Night Running.” This song is just another single in promotion of their forthcoming, fifth studio album Social Cues, out April 19th on RCA Records.
Coming after the release of “Ready To Let Go” and “House of Glass,” this new track is all singing about vampires and having x-ray vision under a thick, reggae beat. From the dubbed bass line and psychedelic effects the track gives off, there’s no telling that the group wanted to experiment with a new song, with influence from Beck to assist. The lyrics read “My engines flooded / Cold blooded no money / Drunk on something uh / Killing the moonlight / With daylight / Got my x-ray eyes / And I’m feeling so fine.”
Frontman Matt Schultz continues to sing on with lyrics, “We’re on a night run / No telling who we’re running from / In a world of secrets and demons and people hiding from the sun.” These lyrics could be referencing the deterioration of Schultz’s marriage, as most of this album was written during this time.
The two artists are also using this new single as a promotional moe for their co-headlining tour this summer, named after their track together. The tour will feature a whole range of different opening acts throughout its course, such as Spoon, Starcrawler, Wild Belle and Sunflower Bean.
Fans won’t have to wait much longer for the album as it will be released in less than a month. And before they know it, the summer tour will commence in the following three months.
UPDATE (5/3): Cage the Elephant and Beck have shared a music video for their new song “Night Running.” The song has a dark, ’80s-inspired theme that’s a solid match up for the island vibes of the song.
