Mikal Cronin has returned with a new song called “Undertow,” his first new solo track in four years. “Undertow” includes contributions from guitarist William Tyler, vocalist Shannon Lay and longtime collaborator Ty Segall.It will be featured on an upcoming 7″ and will include another new track called “Breathe.” The 7″ will be released May 10 via Famous Class.
According to Pitchfork, Cronin released a statement about “Undertow,” stating “It’s easy to get caught up in an undertow, pulled down into the water, weightless and directionless. The current stirs and you lose your way.” He continues to say “But eventually, if you’re lucky and patient, you can float back up to the surface and take a breath. This is my first new music in a while—my gulp of air. Many talented friends joined me, the basic tracks were recorded live together for the first time in my recording career. Cronin’s last effort was his 2015 high-fidelity ranked album MCII. Mxdwn praised the album, stating “If Mikal Cronin really did nothing ever again, this work would be a fantastic claim to fame, a straightforward take-no-prisoners vessel of life and personality, complete with cranked guitars and gliding melodies.” His most recent track being a demo that included Kim Gordon called “War/Golden God” in 2017.
