BVRTH is the brainchild of Minnesota musician Derek Virta, who creates dynamic and entrancing electronic music. He’s a former member of Dreamend, who are known as the Graveface Records “house band.” He’s got a self-titled debut album, BVRTH, out on April 19 and today we’re excited to premiere the latest single from the record, a glitchy mostly-instrumental track called “Warden.”
“‘Warden’ was inspired by my first love: hip-hop,” said Virta. “As a child, I frequented used cassette shops in Boston with my friends. Digable Planets, A Tribe Called Quest, Digital Underground, Guru’s ‘Jazzmatazz’. I loved the Herbie Hancock samples, but didn’t know who he was.”
BVRTH is influenced by numerous artists, including Virta’s former tourmates Black Moth Super Rainbow, as well as groups like Stereolab, Aphex Twin, Suicide and Low. Despite these influences and the hip-hop influences that color “Warden,” Virta listened to post-hardcore bands like Fugazi and Unwound in high-school. These ingredients come together to create what is a very unique sound for his project BVRTH. BVRTH will be released through Virta’s own Virtageaux Records.
