Anamanaguchi with Bit Shifter & Nullsleep @ H0l0 4/6

Chiptune masters Anamanaguchi will be performing a hardware DJ set at H0l0 in Ridgewood, Queens on April 6th. NYC-based artists Bit Shifter and Nullsleep will open the night, which begins at 7:00pm, with doors opening an hour earlier. A ticket to this over 21 event will run you $20.

Anamanaguchi, Bit Shifter, and Nullsleep are all notable players in the video game music universe, each transforming the sampled sounds of Gameboys and NES consoles to create infectious, satisfyingly-crunchy pop tracks. Anamanaguchi’s sound in particular has reached ears far and wide – the group is known for their work on the soundtrack for the video game rendition of Scott Pilgrim vs. The World, as well as several LPs of their own that have reached worldwide acclaim. They do not have a typical bitpop sound, however – citing influences ranging from Japanese-pop to The Beach Boys and Janet Jackson, Anamanaguchi creates pop music that both noobs and serial gamers will enjoy.

Supporting Anamanaguchi is Bit Shifter, another name taking over the video game music realm. Instead of opting for creating stylized pop, Bit Shifter’s music – especially on his latest release Closed System Blues – leans more heavily into its electronic roots, opting for a more EDM-based sound. This makes for an interesting contrast that will surely mix things up and make attendees happy.

Nullsleep, the show’s second opening act, provides yet another shifting perspective in the chiptune world, turning bleeps, boops, and pings into encapsulating melodies and head-bopping beats. Despite working with the exact same sounds and samples as his fellow performers, Nullsleep takes his music in another decidedly different direction. Where Anamanaguchi and Bit Shifter edge toward pop and EDM respectively, Nullsleep flirts with the line of alt-rock and almost heavy-metal-esque influences. While listening to tracks on his 2008 EP Unconditional Accelleration, I kept imagining Nullsleep’s powerful melodies being shredded by an electric guitar with ease.

If you want to discover the full scope of what this fascinating subculture is musically capable of, then look no more. This show is the place to be.

Melissa Aiello: Hi there, nice to meet you! My name is Melissa and I am a 24-year-old passionate lover of all things related to music and live entertainment. I've been singing since the second grade, and playing guitar for the past five years. I grew up in a fairly musical household, with my grandfather breaking out his accordion and starting sing-a-longs at every family gathering. It was here that I began falling in love with music and its power to change moods, emotions, and lives. My taste in music goes far and wide - you name it, I'll (probably) listen to it. My hundreds of Spotify playlists include everything from Biggie to ABBA to the Jonas Brothers (thank GOD they're back together) to Dolly Parton and everything in-between. I aim for my little corner of the internet to spread love and positivity for all this beautiful music, and give you the opportunity to see or hear artists you may otherwise have not heard of.
