Late last year, Sacramento alternative metal band Deftones announced and teased on social media that they had new material lined up for 2019. Fans have much more to be hyped up about, as lead vocalist Chino Moreno has just expressed that their forthcoming album will take on a very experimental nature that is reminiscent of their 2000 classic, White Pony.
As reported by Loudwire, Moreno in speaking with Kerrang!, compared their upcoming album to their massive White Pony record, which he states was simultaneously the band’s “most commercially successful record,” but also “one of [their] most experimental records” considering the era it was released in. Moreno describes the recording of their latest record as “morphing every day that [they] get together and write,” and the band are in a very free and unconstricted zone where they can try “completely different ways of doing things.”
Since their formation in 1988, Deftones has been an innovative force in the metal scene, having experimented with various genres and rock styles over their career. The band currently consists of Moreno, Stephen Carpenter, Abe Cunningham, Frank Delgado, and Sergio Vega. Last year, Moreno released a solo track that was inspired by DC Entertainment graphic novel, DARK NIGHTS: METAL, that is titled, “Brief Exchange.” Deftones’ upcoming record will be their 9thstudio album together. Their previous 2016 release, Gore, was a massive hit, debuting at number 2 on the US Billboard 200, and it was also highly ranked on mxdwn’s list of Best Albums of 2016.
