American rock band The Black Keys have released a new track entitled “Lo/Hi,” the first new music release from the duo since their 2014 album, Turn Blue. Put out under the Nonesuch Records label, the song was co-written and produced by Dan Auerbach and Patrick Carney and recorded in Nashville’s very own Easy Eye Sound studio.
The new track finds itself dwelling in blues-rock tune, from the distorted riff to the soulful female background vocals. Auerbach sings “Nobody to love you / Nobody to care / Nobody to drug you / No one to hold back your hair” leading up to the chorus, depicting a person who has wound up in the pits of rock bottom.
Although this is the band’s first new track in nearly five years, Auerbach and Carney have been keeping themselves busy with independent music projects. In 2017, Auerbach formed the Easy Eye Sound record label, named after his Nashville studio, and released his second solo album entitled Waiting on a Song. The record label has become a home for artists like Yola, Shannon & The Clams, Sonny Smith, Robert Finley, and Dee White to name a few.
Carney has been busy on the other hand producing and recording new music with artists like Calvin Johnson, Michelle Branch, Tobias Jesso, Tennis, Repeat Repeat, Turbo Fruits and many more. He’s also been fortunate enough to create the theme music for Netflix’s hit TV show BoJack Horseman with his late uncle, Ralph Carney.
Fans will also be delighted to know that The Black Keys will be performing at Woodstock’s 50th Anniversary Festival. Should fans expect the band to get back together and release a new record? Only time will tell.
