Nick Murphy Announced New Album Run Fast Sleep Naked for April 2019 Release

Nick Murphy

Nick Murphy has announced the details for his highly-anticipated full-length sophomore album, Run Fast Sleep Naked. The album will be released on April 26th under the Downtown Records / Future Classic / Opulent labels. The Australian producer and musician have also teased fans with a music video for the new lead single, “Sanity.”

Co-produced by Dave Harrington, Run Fast Sleep Naked’s vocals were collected after Murphy traveled around the world alone for four years and carried a microphone in his suitcase. He would record vocal tracks whenever he found “spaces and environments” that inspired the artist the most, ranging from his grandmother’s living room, a studio in Tokyo and even a vacation rental he shared with his family back in New Zealand.

During this time, Murphy immersed himself into a process of intense self-examination, primarily in tangent with Joseph Campbell’s writings about the artist’s ‘shaman-like role” in today’s society. The album serves as a document of Murphy constantly questioning himself and arriving at fragments of truth.

“It’s almost like I was finding different shapes and colors from around the world, and then bringing them back and putting them all together,” said Murphy in a press release. “If you sit in one space for a long period of time, you get settled and stop experiencing the world in a new way. There’s a kind of power in leaping into the void without set structures and systems in place.”

The musical composition of the album was mainly recorded at Figure 8 Studios in Brooklyn, NY. There, Murphy gathered over 15 musicians and a full orchestra to create unexpected sounds and varied tones in each song.

The lead single of the album, “Sanity,” was written at Rick Rubin’s Shangri-La studio and features soulful vocals, varied beats and upbeat piano melodies. His self-aware lyrics in the second verse that read, “I spent up all my time, you know? / Predicting it all / Trying to see it note for note / I know it was gone / Could it be a symphony / In a room full of silence? / Did I preach hypocrisy?” are reflective of Murphy’s overall message of questioning himself on this album.

This forthcoming album will serve as a follow-up to Murphy’s 2014 debut, Built on Glass, which was released under his former stage name, Chet Faker. Also, it will be a two year follow up since his 2017 Missing Link EP.
