Bob Dylan, The Flaming Lips, High on Fire are just a small fraction of the plethora of artists prepared to issue special releases for Record Store Day 2019. The annual event will continue to honor independent, local record stores worldwide on April 13th.
Epitaph Records, an independent record label in Los Angeles, has collected a list of artists under their label to promote new releases for fans on the international holiday. The bands enlisted to participate are Bad Religion with 7” record My Sanity, The Menzingers are releasing “No Penance” and “Cemetery’s Garden” on a 7” as well, Thrice will throw in four unreleased tracks from their 2018 album Palms with an EP entitled Deeper Wells, and Justin Courtney Pierre will have Open Mic at the Lo-Fi: Vol 1 record for the public.
The record label has also licensed four songs to be included in a 3” disc collectors bundle. The songs being Bad Religion’s “My Sanity,” Culture Abuse “Dip,” The Interrupter “She’s Kerosene” and Rancid “Ruby Soho.”
Warner Bros. Records has also stepped in to be a proud sponsor for the annual event. The label itself has signed artists from Greenday, The Flaming Lips and The Gorillaz, to Mastodon and My Chemical Romance.
In celebration of the 25th anniversary of their Woodstock performance and the 50th anniversary of Woodstock, Green Day is releasing their Woodstock 1994 Live set as a vinyl record for the first time ever. Some of the pop-punk classics include “Welcome to Paradise,” “Longview,” “When I Come Around,” “F.O.D” and “Burnout.”
Mastodon will be releasing an exclusive 10’ vinyl entitled Stairway to Nick John, in remembrance of their longtime manager who passed away due to pancreatic cancer in 2018. Led Zeppelin remained to be John’s favorite band till his final days, and Mastodon wanted to honor that.” The exclusive record features a studio version of “Stairway to Heaven” on Side A, while Side B features a live version of the same song.
Other special releases include High On Fire’s homage record released entitled Bat Salad. This special release has the “Bat Salad” single on the A-Side, while the band covered Celtic Frost’s “The Crypts of Rays” and Bad Brain’s “Don’t Bother Me” on the B-Side. U2 will also be presenting their The Europa EP which takes inspirations from an unreleased opening from their European tour, Charlie Chaplin’s final speech in the movie The Great Dictator, and remixes of other artist’s songs.
The first Record Store Day was conceived on April 19, 2008, with “a goal of celebrating and spreading the word about the culture surrounding independently owned record stores,” according to a press release.” Since then, the annual event is celebrating its 12th year and has participation on a global scale. There’s no way of stopping them now from continuing this tradition now!
