Los Angeles alternative-pop act HighSchool Jacob takes a funky, retro approach to his sound. He previously released a fun, funk-influenced dance track “Can’t Get Enough” and today we’ve got the premiere for his next track, “Sunrise, I Fall.”
This song takes the listener on a much different sonic journey than the old-school take on Daft Punk that was “Can’t Get Enough.” This one is full of soulful synths, creating a mournful sound that pairs well with its downtempo beat. The vocals are distant and wistful.
“After a long long time of not seeing someone I cared about, I saw them from across a crowd looking amazing with their hair up,” said HighSchool Jacob. “I had told that person in the past that they always looked great with their hair up and that they should do it more often. Seeing that made me feel a mixture of validation and sadness that this song tries to convey. Though on the the surface the song initially seems like an unrequited love story, by the end the protagonist reveals themselves to be a narcissist trying to eerily invade the subject’s life,” he said. “This is something I am often interested in writing about as those lines are often ignored when dealing with the narrator of a song who may or may not be the infallible person we often make them out to be.”
