Mitski Shares Richly Animated New Video for “A Pearl”

The indie rockstar Mitski has returned with yet another striking music video for “A Pearl,” the fourth single off her fifth studio album Be The Cowboy. Mitski has been throwing appealing, imaginative music videos back to back with her recent singles, from the surrealism horror of “Nobody” to the film noir femme fatale of “Washing Machine Heart,” and this new one is no different.

“A Pearl” is an animated feature of 1,480 individual frames that were painted, drawn and illustrated by designers Saad Moosajee and Danae Gosset, reported Rolling Stone. The video begins with a woman in a white dress walking along a dreamlike landscape, and in one instant, she is running through the living, with the camera zooming in and out. Eventually the character reaches the tip of a transparent ledge and falls into a colorful abyss with guitar riffs supporting her downfall.

Mitski tweeted out about the visuals, saying, “I think it’s beautiful and I’m honored my music accompanies it. Thank you!!” Even the music streaming service Spotify has shared the visuals onto their platform when listeners play the album, as part of a collaboration Spotify has recently been doing with artists and their music videos.

Michael Izquierdo: I'm a third-year student at The New School studying Journalism & Design in order to tell stories that are often misrepresented or unreported on. I want to take my writing and report on stories within the LGBTQ+ and Latinx community. In terms of music, play me a smooth jazz tune, an upbeat pop song, or an unheard indie artist and I'm sure I'll become infatuated by the music. I am always here to share someone else's story, to uplift a voice in any community.
