The death metal band Allegaeon have not forgotten about their devoted fans and are returning with a new album this upcoming spring. The Colorado-based band are set to release their fifth studio album Apoptosis on April 19th through Metal Blade Records.
The new record consists of 11 new tracks and will be one of the band’s most technical and progressive projects to be released yet. Allegaeon will also continue to sticking to their constant Science-themed related titles, previously releasing albums entitled Fragments of Form and Function, Formshifter, Elements of the Infinite and Proponent for Sentience. When tackling about the significance of this album, frontman Riley McShane said, “Apoptosis is the scientific term for when cells systemically die to have new cells come and replace… So growth is really the theme of the album.”
Growth within the new record and in the band lineup is widely evident, considering Apoptosis will feature the band’s newest member, bassist Brandon Michael. McShane went on to talk about Michael in a press release, stating, “Musically, Brandon brings a huge new dimension. He has this whole wide breadth of music knowledge and stylistic proficient that he draws from with excellent taste, and this makes a lot of the songs on ‘Apoptosis’ come to life.”
Record at Flatline Audio in Denver and produced by Dave Otero, this new album broke new territory for the band in more ways than one. Instead of worrying about if the new material sounded like Allegaeon’s usual sound, guitarist Michael Stancel said, “I would take a step back and see if that idea fit the song and decide if it was worth keeping.” Maintaining that mentality throughout the process of recording, he was able to make some of his favorite songs because it made him less worried about if their new sound fit the idea of what Allegaeon has always sounded like.
There are also smaller details that made the biggest difference with this album. The vocals were heavier, the drums were faster and the guitar was played lower and slower. This all provide radical change in the group’s usual framework, but added more clean and wide network of new material.
