DMX, real name Earl Simmons, has been released from prison, according to Pitchfork. News of his release was first reported by Vulture on January 24 after speaking with Simmons’ lawyer, Murray Richman.
“I spoke to him; he’s very happy,” Richman said. “He’s looking forward to being home. He’s never been hotter than now — people have been seeking him out all over.”
Although Simmons’ release date from Gilmer Federal Correctional Institution in West Virginia is scheduled for Sunday, January 27, the Federal Bureau of Prisons has a policy to release inmates on the weekday before their release date if said release date falls on a weekend.
Simmons was sent to jail in January 2018 on a bail violation after previously pleading guilty to tax evasion in November 2017. In March 2018, Simmons was sentenced to one year in prison for felony tax evasion.
Simmons will reportedly be under supervised release for three years.
