St. Vincent Covers Red Hot Chili Peppers’ “Breaking The Girl” at Malibu Love Sesh

Malibu Love Session took place last week and featured a star-studded lineup with Red Hot Chili Peppers, Beck and St. Vincent among the performers. St. Vincent, a performer who has become well-known for her inventive covers of surprising songs, gave the audience a special treat at the show when she performed a cover of the Chili Peppers’ classic “Breaking The Girl.”

Performing alone with just a guitar, she is mostly faithful to the original, though of course throws in enough of her own personal flavor to make it undeniably a St. Vincent song. Check out the cover below.

“Breaking The Girl” came from the band’s smash hit album, Blood Sugar Sex Magick. It was released in the mid-’90s as a single from the album, accompanied with a pretty bizarre video filmed in the desert. John Frusciante would return to the band for Californication, an album that would give the band a bit of a mid-career resurgence, which hasn’t waned since.

The concentration of talent at Malibu Love Sesh at the Hollywood Palladium on January 13 led to one incredible collaboration when Jack Black teamed up with Beck for a performance of “Sexx Laws.” Black approached the song with his typical outrageous fashion, a perfect complement to Beck playing the straight man.
