Mexican punk band Le Butchrettes have shared new song and music video entitled “give/UP” off their upcoming release bi / MENTAL which is set for release on February 1 via Rise Records. Although the group is originally from Guadalaja, they are based out of El Paso Texas, a border town and Los Angeles.
“give/UP,” features the band’s punk rock style which shows obvious inspiration and development from the garage rock movement during the early 2000s. The video for the group features their unique aesthetic with their front woman Teri Gender Bender wearing a Native American headdress and assorted attire in contrast with the other members.
Le Butchrettes is a four piece ensemble composed of two women and two men: Gender Bender, Alejandra Robles on drums, Ricardo Rodrigo Lopez on guitar and Marfred Rodriguez Lopez on bass. For this latest project the group has worked with Alice Bag and punk legend Jello Biafra, the original frontman for hardcore punk band the Dead Kennedy’s.
Originating in 2007 the group gained fame for their eclectic live shows which featured 1950s fashions and props such as brooms, feather dusters, and bloody aprons to refer to women being slaves. This allowed them to gain early fame, allowing them to open up for influential bands such as The Mars Volta and The Yeah Yeah Yeahs during the late 2000s and early 2010s.
Gender Bender has been the only consistent member of the band since it’s inception which has gone through a revolving line up. The rest of the band’s current line-up are new, with most of them only joining the frontwoman during or after 2016.
In 2015 the group released their first album entitled A Raw Youth, which helped them gain prominence across the garage rock music scene. Prior to this release the band had all of their previous albums produced by Omar Rodríguez-López of At The Drive-In and The Mars Volta.
“Essentially, this record was inspired by the death of a living mother but none of that matters anymore,” singer Teri Gender Bender explained regarding this upcoming album. Last year the group released the struggle/STRUGGLE EP, which was released back in 2018.
In addition to the title track off the EP the upcoming album will feature the track “spider/WAVES” which featured the aforementioned Biafra. Numerous singles for the project have debuted ahead of the album’s release.
“A disconnection in itself is so ravage so confusing it leaves one feeling incomplete… is there hope? Is there light?” Gender Bender explained regarding the new album. “Maybe it all isn’t so black and white. in the end there is a Duality in All. Life is a cycle, the moon, the sun, the ocean waves transcending into sand. It will be okay.”
