Sharon Van Etten’s new album Remind Me Tomorrow is set to release on January 18 through Jagjaguwar. Van Etten just released the album’s second single, “Seventeen,” directed by Maureen Towey. “Seventeen” follows the album’s first two released songs, “Comeback Kid” and “Jupiter 4.”
The video shows Van Etten reflecting on a time when she was seventeen. A time when she was young, carefree and an artist who roamed the streets of NYC in search of her dream. The video opens with an expressway sign of Brooklyn/Queens and Van Etten looking on from a stairwell. The video lyrics “I used to be seventeen, down beneath the ashes and stone. I see you so uncomfortably alone. I wish I could show you how much you’ve grown. I know what you’re gonna be. Afraid you’ll be just like me. I used to feel free or was it just a dream. Think you’re so carefree, but your just seventeen.”
Director of “Seventeen” music video, Maureen Towey shares, “Sharon wanted to use this video to create a love letter to New York, her home for the last 15 years. She showed us around all her old haunts — the places that made her the musician that she is today. Some of these spots are still around, some are just empty lots now. We took an eye toward the city that was both tender and tough, trying to find the ways that a beautiful city can fall apart while still nurturing the hopes of a young artist.”
“Crazy, crazy, crazy,” Van Etten said, taking in the scope of her hectic but life-affirming last three years, which, ironically enough, began when she tried to press pause on her music career. “I can’t even believe we’ve done what we’ve done.” Her album, Remind Me Tomorrow is described in a press release as the life that gets lived when you put off the small and inevitable maintenance in favor of something more present. It was written while pregnant, going to school for psychology, and after taking The OA audition.”
Van Etten who is from Belleville, New Jersey is slated to stop at Union Transfer on February 7 for her upcoming world tour. The stop at Union Transfer is in support of the new album Remind Me Tomorrow, due to drop January 18, 2019.
Van Etten released “Jupiter 4” another song off the new album. The video director, Katherine Dieckmann explains the making of the video. “Getting to make a video for ‘Jupiter 4’ was such a gift that Sharon gave to me. The song is a fever dream, a spell cast in the name of obsession. I was hypnotized by it when I first heard it, and have never stopped being hypnotized by it – and by now I have probably heard it over a hundred times, maybe more.”
Van Etten has guest-starred in The OA, performed in David Lynch’s revival of Twin Peaks, scored her first feature film, Strange Weather, and the closing title song for Tig Notaro’s Tig. The range of her passions (musical, emotional, otherwise), of new careers, projects and lifelong roles, has inflected Remind Me Tomorrow with a wise sense of a warped-time perspective.
