Classic crossover punk band the Meat Puppets have reunited with their original line up, and will go on tour for the first time in over 20 years this upcoming spring. The tour will begin in Mill Valley, California on April 4th and will end in Jersey City, New Jersey on May 18th of this year.
In addition to this announcement the band have also released a new track entitled “Nine Pins,” this week, making it available on all streaming platforms. This single was also composed by the band’s original line-up Curt Kirkwood, Cris Kirkwood and Derrick Bostrom.
This track blend’s quick punk styled drumming with the Meat Puppets signature folksy and country driven guitars in regards to its instrumentation. A playful synth line is also heard throughout the track in addition to these elements contributing further to the alternative folk atmosphere that the track creates.
The Kirkwood brothers and Derrick Bostrom formed the Meat Puppets back in 1980 in Phoenix Arizona, originating as a hardcore punk band during their early years. They eventually blended with style with elements of country and psychedelic rock to create the “cowpunk,” genre during the 80s, giving the band a unique sound against the many punk groups of this era.
Due to many issues, including the ever present substance abuse issues among the Kirkwood brothers, the band took a hiatus in 2006, a year after the release of their album No Joke! This release was the band’s last effort with the original line-up until the announcement of Dusty Notes.
While Curt Kirkwood eventually toured as Meat Puppets with Shannon Sahm, Andrew Duplantis and Kyle Ellison between 1999 and 2002, the band was officially broken up after 2002. In 2006 the Kirkwood brothers reunited and began touring and recording music together.
Toward the tail end of last year it was announced that Bostrom would reunited with the band and record the upcoming album Dusty Notes with them, which is set to be released in March. A single for the album entitled “Warranty,” was released by the three last month.
According to the band members, they reunited for the first time in 2017 during their induction to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. “It was so intense that even I couldn’t deny it! I remember why we did this. It was magical,”Bostrom elaborated regarding the event.
“The band has been a really, really deep font of creativity,” Bostrom explained in a press release. “Love it or hate it, hit or miss, Curt is just prodigious. They are still living the rock lifestyle; they’re not doing it by half measures. They stayed on the road. These guys are uncompromising. I consider the Meat Puppets to be a national treasure.”
