One of the original music festivals is celebrating its 50th anniversary. Woodstock has announced plans to celebrate with a three-day music festival, taking place August 16-18 in Watkins Glen, New York. TAhe festival originally took place in Bethel, New York but has since changed to a concert venue. According to Pitchfork, the first wave of artists are expected to be released in February, with the lineup eventually including over 60 artists performing across three stages. Co-creator Michael Lang spoke with Rolling Stone about the lineup, stating“It’ll be an eclectic bill…. It’ll be hip-hop and rock and some pop and some of the legacy bands from the original festival.” He continued to say, “We’re also looking for unique collaborations, maybe some reunions and lot of new and up-and-coming talent.” Plans for the 50th anniversary have been three years in the making.
Speaking with the New York Times, Lang and the festival organizers expect to sell over 100,000 passes for the celebration. Lang also expressed interest in including tributes to performers who performed at the original Woodstock in 1999 including Janis Joplin, Jefferson Airplane and others. He also briefly discussed the 99 version of Woodstock, which faced accounts of violence and sexual assault. “Woodstock ’99 was just a musical experience with no social significance…. It was just a big party. With this one, we’re going back to our roots and our original intent. And this time around, we’ll have control of everything.”
