mxdwn PREMIERE: Grandchildren Explore a Town on the Brink in New Video for “Zuni”

Grandchildren are an indie pop band from Philadelphia, PA, fronted by a couple: Aleks Martray and Shari Bolar. The band is gearing up for the release of their new album, which will be self-titled and released some time next year (2019). Today, we’re excited to premiere the video for a song from that album, a track titled “Zuni.”

In the video, the band pay homage to a town on the brink of disappearing. A sleepy town in Virginia called Zuni, which was once a prosperous place of industry has dwindled down to just a few families. The town faces a crisis between constant flooding from the nearby Blackwater River. The video touches on these themes, showcasing the battle between man and nature. The video is directed by Bettina Escauriza (Sundance Institute Knight Fellow) and was filmed at Devil’s Pool, which is a secluded but notorious waterfall just miles from the center of Philadelphia. The song is a hauntingly beautiful indie-folk tune with fingerpicked guitars and martray and Bolar’s complementary harmonizing.

Grandchildren have released three LPs before their fourth self-titled record is set to drop this year. These releases include Everlasting in 2010, Golden Age in 2013 and ZUNI in 2015. Considering the band is fronted by a pair of musicians that are romantically involved, the contents of this upcoming release chart the course of the pair’s relationship, starting with their chance meeting, to a long distance relationship, to breakup, and finally redemption.

The band has a handful of dates coming up, including an appearance at SXSW this March. They’ll be playing in Arkansas and North Carolina as they return back from the venture to Central Texas’ landmark musical event.
