A new album is on the way for early punk 2000 punk band The Distillers who recently reunited last year for two tracks “Man Vs Magnet and “Blood In Gutters.” This will be the group’s first full length album since the release of 2003’s Coral Fang, which cemented the band’s status as one of the great up and coming punk groups of the early 2000s.
Frontwoman Brody Dalle posted a statement on social media stating “Hello 40, hello making a Distillers record in April.” It is currently unknown when exactly the album will be released, or if any of the two singles released last year will be included on the album.
Both “Man Vs Magnet and “Blood In Gutters,” are straight away punk tracks filled with high energy, fast tempos and simple yet catchy chords. “Blood In Gutters,” was originally a rerecording of Dalle’s solo track off her 2014 album Diploid Love.
The first announcement that the group would return was made last year, after Dalle released teaser trailer hinting at the band’s return. Soon after, the band announced a set of spring tour dates for 2018, marking their first tour in over a decade.
When the Distillers first arrived to the scene Dalle was in her early 20s, and in a tumultuous relationship with Tim Armstrong the frontman of Rancid. Dalle met Armstrong, who was 13 years her senior at the age of 16 and had a relationship with him that ended up in a marriage at the age of 18.
In 2003 she eventually divorced Armstrong, who she said was very controlling of her. In addition Dalle stated that Armstrong had blacklisted her from the music industry after their break-up and that this event caused her and her future husband Josh Homme of Queens of The Stone Age to receive numerous death threats from outraged Rancid fans.
“We lost every fucking body. Me and my guys were left there standing alone, holding each other,” Dalle explained during an interview with The Guardian in 2004. Despite this pressure, Dalle cites other factors such as stress from touring and heavy drug abuse as reasons for the band’s break-up.
“We’d been on tour for two years straight and we were exhausted. We were sick of each other, uninspired, Dalle explained in the interview. “It(drug use) was really heavy. What we should’ve done was take a hiatus. But it was so intense – the Distillers always was. We were so young, we couldn’t see any other way for it to be.”
Since then Dalle has become a mother of three children, yet has also continued putting out a variety of work intermittently since her break-up with the Distillers. From 2007-2011 the artist joined up with Alain Johannes, former bandmate Tony Bevilacqua and Jack Irons to form Spinnerette who released one EP in 2008 and a self-titled debut album in 2009.
After a brief hiatus after the band’s dissolution, Dalle returned with a solo album in 2014 Diploid Love. It was during this time that Dalle described re-establishing communications with her former Distillers band members.
