Toro y Moi has just released a new single called “Ordinary Pleasure” from his upcoming album Outer Place, due for a release on January 18th under Carpark Records. This new single follows the release of the debut single for the album, “Freelance.”
In this new track, Toro y Moi keeps delivering the same ‘ol groovy tunes his fans know and love. The playful song taps into a funky, yet smooth bassline and bongo drum rhythms, while the artist provides a lightness to the vocals.
The new tracks on the forthcoming album incorporate sounds of contemporary hip-hop, funk and Eurodance elements into one distinct sound that’s easily recognizable as Toro’s distinctive brand. He mentioned in a press release that, “this record is a response to how disposable culture has become and how it affects creativity,” before continuing on with, “while listening, you might pay attention or ignore – either way, that’s ok, this is music for a creative mind.”
Toro y Moi, otherwise known as Chaz Bear, grew up a musician from the day he was born. He grew up listening to a variety of artists from Michael Jackson to The Specials while growing up, which helped contribute to his understanding of his self-expression and musical identity. As a pre-teen, he began recording original material, forming multiple indie bands until his own personal project, Toro y Moi, was signed by Carpark Records in 2009. By then, he had already released over 10 albums under this stage name, while containing a vast collection of unreleased material for a growing audience.
Since signing with Carpark Records, Toro y Moi has continued to shut down assumptions that he was only able to produce music similar to his album Causers of This, the first album under his record label. He has been able to produce a psych rock-genre based album What For? and a heavily R&B influenced album Boo Boo, always setting the records straight that he was versatile and you could recognize it was his own material.
