mxdwn PREMIERE: Ben Sparaco and The New Effect Release Wistfully Twinkling New Song “Scared of the Dark”

Combining elements of indie rock and jam band music, Ben Sparaco and The New Effect are a Nashville based trio with eclectic style. Today, we have the premiere for their latest single, the laid-back jam of “Scared of the Dark.” The song features gorgeous guitar production along with Sparaco’s appealing lead vocals.

In addition to Sparaco, The New Effect features Adam Discipio on bass and Anthony Quirk on drums (both graduates of Berklee College of Music). Their first LP was released in 2017, titled Wooden and they recently released a new EP Greetings, from Ben Sparaco and The New Effect. The band’s leader has played with an impressive roster of artists, having cut his teeth with jam band Crazy Fingers, North Mississippi Allstars, Oteil Burbridge, Kofi Burbridge, Yonrico Scott, Kebbi Williams, Ron Holloway, Devon Allman, Gregg Allman Band, The Heavy Pets, The Buffalo Philharmonic Orchestra, and Bonnie Bramlett.

“We had a lot more time than we have in the past to record this song and it allowed us to really fine tune it and tweak it to get it exactly where we like it,” said Sparaco. “It was produced collaboratively with the band and the engineer Drew Carroll at The Bomb Shelter in East Nashville. He’s been a huge help to us with this single and our last EP Greetings.”

While it’s a straightforward pop-rock song, there’s a lot of layers and action going on in the mix. “We were able to play this song live and work out the kinks long before we got into the studio,” he said. “That allowed us to really get the bones of the song hashed out so we could get a solid live take of the rhythm parts in the first few hours of recording. Then we used the rest of the time to fully utilize the studio to make it come to life.”
