Pitchfork and the Art Institute of Chicago have just announced a new three-night festival held in the Windy City, a collaborative celebration of music and art, titled Midwinter. The event will feature a multitude of incredible live performances alongside iconic works of art come February 15-17, 2019.
Artists will be performing from within the museum, where audiences will be able to bask in the music as well as the ambient installations in the museum, “inspired by and responding to the iconic works of the Art Institute.” Not only are there the live sets, but concertgoers will also be treated to artist interviews, DJ sets, and even a pre-event dinner.
Pitchfork festival director Adam Krefman said about the new festival, “Midwinter is an ambitious new concept, and with it we’re intentionally trying to push the boundaries of live music. Placing forward-thinking musicians in the context of the Art Institute, we’re opening a dialogue between mediums, and creating a unique cultural event. This February, you’ll be able to look at a Monet while listening to original music from Nico Muhly; Laurie Anderson will occupy the same space as Georgia O’Keeffe, while the glitch-rap of JPEGMAFIA is playing in another wing of the museum. I can’t think of another event quite like it and we are excited to bring it to life in Chicago.”
And many fans are sure to be excited by this unprecedented lineup of “forward-thinking musicians,” including the likes of Slowdive, Kamasi Washington, Panda Bear, Mount Eerie, Oneohtrix Point Never, William Basinski (performing The Disintegration Loops and On Time Out of Time), Tortoise (performing a 21st anniversary rendition of their 1998 record TNT), Deerhunter, Grouper, Laurie Anderson, Perfume Genius, Jlin, Mykki Blanco, DJ Koze, serpentwithfeet, Yves Tumor, Zola Jesus, JPEGMAFIA, Sudan Archives, Baba Stiltz, Joey Purp, Weyes Blood, Hiss Golden Messenger, Smerz, Madison McFerrin, Mary Lattimore, Daniel Bachman, Haley Fohr of Circuit Des Yeux, and Marisa Anderson.
In addition, artists like Stars of the Lid, Tashi Wadi & Julia Holter, Nico Muhly, Kaitlyn Aurelia Smith, Midori Takada, Visible Cloaks, Helado Negro, and Ilyes Ahmed will all have “original soundscape installations” on display in the museum throughout the event.
