Starting off on the right foot
The release of Two Medicine’s debut album, Astropsychosis, takes listeners on one of the most chill journeys of 2018. The album itself is only nine tracks in length, but feels like it could honestly be the soundtrack to a lifetime all due to the psychedelic tendencies that keep the listener’s mind on its toes. While it is definitely a more relaxed album, it could be argued to be one of the more entertaining releases of the year.
The album opens on “SF,” which sets the stage for what is to come throughout the entirety of the album. Soft vocals are paired with intricate guitar work and topped off with whimsical sounds, making for a very pleasant five-minute experience. “Will Not” continues showcasing the guitar work from previous tracks but this time with a slightly different feel to it in the sense that it is a little more charged up of a track overall. This definitely makes the track stand out amongst the others, all while maintaining the sound that makes Two Medicine so unique.
The beauty of this album is that each track has its own story to tell, but at the same time possesses something slightly special that makes it easy to categorize it as a Two Medicine track. In that sense, this album does a great job of setting the standard for the listeners on who Two Medicine is and what it’s all about musically. “An Eye For An I” is somewhat reminiscent of something that would be found on the Stranger Things soundtrack. It is almost effortlessly possible to get lost in the vocals on this track, and they are something that will stick in your mind even after the song is over.
“Kuopio” takes the album on a slightly different path by highlighting more acoustic vibes through and through, while still maintaining the same soft vocals that have been on every track previously. As the track goes on, it builds in a way that you feel within, making for an unforgettable track in a sea of outstanding songs that make up the entire LP. While “Kuopio” definitely slows everything down, it does not discount from the musicianship that is Two Medicine.
The closing track “tmrw” is one of the shortest songs on the album, but somehow it does a great job of summing up everything that was featured before. After listening to the album in its entirety, it may be difficult for some listeners to believe that Astropsychosis is Two Medicine’s debut LP, but it is in fact, and it does an amazing job of introducing the group to the world.
