American grindcore band Agoraphobic Nosebleed has lost their vocalist Kat Katz, who quit after voicing concerns regarding bullying and not being treated as equal by her band mates. Agoraphobic Nosebleed released their own response stating that both Katz and the band had “some disagreements,” before going on to describe the yelling incident that allegedly caused Katz to quit.
“Tired of being bullied by dudes. Salome and now Agoraphobic Nosebleed,” Kats said in a statement posted to Facebook. “I quit Agoraphobic Nosebleed tonight. Hopefully, I find a band that respects me and treats me as an equal.”
Agoraphobic Nosebleed initially responded by saying that while the band had disagreements, that they wish her the best in future endeavors. They also stated that they will be writing new music for the band some time soon.
The band then described the incident in question, claiming that Katz was attending to a friend going through a mental health emergency. According to stories told by both Katz and the band, Katz did not respond to their calls, or tell them where she was, causing the band’s guitarist, Scott Hull to yell at her.
“I told her that we were worried about her and that she should have told us what she was doing. I yelled it actually, because we were genuinely concerned and had mobilized to go find her,” Hull stated on the band’s Facebook page. “The rest of the evening was spent in silence. The next day flying home Rich also expressed how angry he was that Kat had trivialized his (and our) concern to another person earlier that morning.”
Katz later gave her own version of the story, stating that the band mates yelled at her so aggressively to the point that she was in tears in the hotel and later the airport. She said that the incident saw the band “treated (her) like a child.” and that she should not have felt treated like that.
“I’m responding to the recent ANb post. Yes, I was trying to help someone having a mental health emergency. At that time, I was out of touch for about 45 minutes. The hotel was 5 minutes away. It was a Saturday night and busy. I was screamed at when I returned outside the hotel, in the hotel room, and the next day, in the airport,” she said in her own Facebook statement. “I was in tears for most of the trip. Dude was screaming at me while I was bawling my eyes out. I was belittled. I was treated like a child. I’m a 34-year-old women. I’m not going to be treated like that. This isn’t about concern. It’s about control.”
Katz has been a part of the band for around a decade, according to the band and she was predominantly featured on the band’s latest EP Arc from 2016. This EP sought to highlight the vocalists musical preferences and style. According to the PRP this project was the first in a planned series meant to highlight each band members music styles.
