A box set commemorating the work of late singer Chris Cornell has been announced, along with the debut of a previously unreleased track titled “When Bad Does Good.” The single, which was produced, recorded and mixed by Cornell, will be included in the box set along with songs spanning his career and other unreleased work.
With a November 16 release date, the Cornell estate has announced four different options for fans. The cheapest option will be a 17-track album that will include the newly released song.
However, for the most dedicated fans, the major news will be the limited edition super deluxe box set with 62 tracks. The set will feature the late singer’s solo work, along with music from his time in Soundgarden, Audioslave and Temple of the Dog.
Along with new unreleased music the kit will come with a 66-page hardcover photo book, a DVD and 4 CDs featuring 88 songs. Among these tracks, 11 of them are unreleased singles.
The box set will also include liner notes from former band mates and colleagues, such as Tom Morello. Morello, who played with Cornell in the band Audioslave, has previously spoken on his former bandmate saying, “I don’t think I’ll ever recover from his passing, but we have so many great memories.” He also previously shared a poem he wrote in honor of his friend’s memory.
Cornell, who made his mark in the band Soundgarden, died from suicide in May 2017. The singer was known for his song-writing and powerful voice and was one of the driving forces of the Grunge movement during the ‘90s. The band was most known for their 1994 hit single “Black Hole Sun”, off their third album, Superunknown.
Aside from his time in Soundgarden, Cornell also worked with other musicians to form two separate “supergroups” Temple of the Dog and Audioslave. He was also known for his solo work and released four solo albums.
While this is the largest collection of Cornell’s work, it is not the first posthumous single released by his estate. In February, a song was released that Cornell recorded based on a poem by the late country singer Johnny Cash. The poem You Never Knew My Mind was published in a book of poems written by Cash, called Forever Words: The Unknown Poems.
For fans of Cornell, the box set looks to be the ultimate tribute to the life and career of a rock icon. While the limited edition box set will set fans back $299, it should be worth it to the most dedicated of fans.
