In a rare collaborative effort, noise rock band HEALTH and lo-fi indie act Soccer Mommy have joined forces on “Mass Grave,” produced by Corrin Roddick, who serves as one-half of the electronica duo Purity Ring. The spacey track features elements of all three projects, with Soccer Mommy (Sophie Allison)’s vocals being used as HEALTH blends their guitar and avant-garde style on top of Roddick’s synth heavy production.
“The annals of music history are filled with a rich tradition of trios,” HEALTH said in statement to Pitchfork. “Crosby, Stills, & Nash… Emerson, Lake, and Palmer… Lennon, McCartney, and that other guy… And now Soccer Mommy, the guy from Purity Ring, and HEALTH.”
In a short promo for the track, shots of a line of skulls and skeletons are shown in a light blue light, before closing out with a text that reads “You Will Love Each Other,” is shown in red. This track holds a dark moody atmosphere as Allisson’s vocals give a somber tone to match its lyrical content.
“I really enjoyed getting to work with the guys from HEALTH on this song,” Allison said in a different statement. “It’s one of the first features I’ve ever done and I love the finished product. It has a kind of apathetic sadness to it that I was really drawn to.”
HEALTH formed in Los Angeles, California back in 2005, gaining attention a couple of years later after they released a remix of the classic Crystal Castles song “Crimewave,” in 2007. After this remix they released their self-titled debut album that same year on the Lovepump United record label.
Last year the band dropped song with Nolife entitled “Hard To Be A God,” which followed the release of their Disco3 remix album. In a statement the band explained “If you like weird shit, this shit is for you. If not, then not so much.”
HEALTH is currently expected to perform at the Cloak and Dagger event in their native Los Angeles this November. They will be joining bands such as DAF and She Wants Revenge at the historic State Theatre for the single day event.
Allison released Clean, her first studio album as Soccer Mommy in March of this year off the Fat Possum record label. The lo-fi indie rock album served as moderate success for the artist, receiving a score of 78 on review aggregator Metacritic.
The singer-songwriter followed this album up with a performance at Brooklyn Vegan’s Lost Weekend 2 at SXSW in Austin, Texas. She followed this up with an appearance at the Northside Festival, in Brooklyn, New York this June.
Purity Ring have been relatively quiet for this year; last year they were chosen to open for pop-star Katy Perry as part of her Witness tour. This tour began late due to noticeable production delays on the pop-stars last album.
Earlier that year the duo made an appearance at Fortress Festival in Fort Worth, Texas. They joined the likes of Run The Jewels, Slowdive and Los Angeles based music producer Flying Lotus on the line-up.
