Alternative rock band Failure have released The Furthest Thing EP, which is the third in a series of four EPs that are a part of the upcoming album who’s currently titled In The Future Your Body Will Be The Furthest Thing. These EPs are sections of the entire album, and each EP title carries part of the upcoming album title.
“This album is turning out to be the most personal album we’ve ever made,” Ken Andrews, the band’s front-man told Revolver earlier this year. “The three of us have all been dealing with issues that have found their way into this material, both musically and lyrically.”
Pre-orders for the full-length album, which is expected to drop this October are available here along with other promotional items, including the previous EP releases. Further promotional materials are available here. There will be a vinyl pressing for the upcoming project as well.
The decision to release the album a series of four EPs is rare in the music industry as albums are usually supported by individual tracks and music videos as promotional tools for full-length albums. Andrews explained that the process of utilizing EPs are based on a loose approach.
“We have a loose way of approaching EPs, which works for us. We haven’t set out to really define what each EP is going to be about,” Andrews explained in his Revolver interview. “But by the nature of how we’re doing it, it tends to be kind of cohesive. Like, we finish a song and then we’re like, well, what do we want to do for the next song? Well, let’s listen to what we’ve got so far.”
Failure’s last album The Heart of a Monster was released back in 2015. The project contained elements of space rock, and was called a follow up to 1996’s Fantastic Planet, which shares its name with a 1970 French animated film classic.
“The way we work is we write and record at the same time. That’s very different than what we did with Fantastic Planet in ’95, ’96. Back then, we went into a house and did the whole thing in six months. Then we went in and re-recorded everything and changed some of the lyrics around,” Andrew’s explained regarding the album.”When you work that way, the songs tend to come out kind of like chunks of time that are usually separated by other things. I’m not saying you end up with a better or worse album, but maybe you end up with a record that is slightly less cohesive.”
In The Future, the first EP in this current series was released back in March. In May, the second EP With Your Body Will Be was released and contained four tracks like each EP that has been released so far.
A music video for the track “Dark Speed” was released in March to coincide with the first EP release. David Dastmalchian of Blade Runner 2049 made an appearance in the music video.
