In July of this year, Billy Corgan surprised The Smashing Pumpkins fans on Instagram with confirmation that the group would be releasing a full length album produced by Rick Rubin. After recording eight songs, the original plan was to split the album into two EP’s, but Corgan has confirmed the final decision to go with one LP.
The Smashing Pumpkins have debuted the second new song off of their still-untitled new album, “Silvery Sometime (Ghosts),” following the release of “Solara” in June, their first new song in 18 years. Along with the first two singles, Corgan has revealed the rest of the lineup to fans, also through Instagram on social media: “Alienation”, “Travels”, “With Sympathy”, “Marchin’ On”, “Knights of Malta”, and “Seek and You Shall Destroy”.
When asked about the sound of new album, Billy Corgan said in radio interview that unlike the band’s other albums it doesn’t really have a concept, and he compared it to 1994’s Pisces Iscariot, a collection of rare songs. The as yet unnamed album is due out in mid-November.
The album, produced and recorded earlier this year, is the first The Smashing Pumpkins album since 2014’s Monuments to an Elegy, the first album to feature Jimmy Chamberlin since 2007’s Zeitgeist, and the first album to feature James Iha since the MACHINA records in 2000. The Smashing Pumpkins also recently completed their first tour together in 20 years, a 36-city North American trek that ran concurrently with the band’s 30th anniversary.
