Punk legends the Misfits are going to be reuniting as “The Original Misfits,” in Chicago Illinois, according to the city’s Live Nation teaser posted on Twitter earlier today. This teaser features a dark image background with the silhouette of an eagle in the background with the caption “All Hell’s Gonna Break Loose,” a reference to the band’s song of the same name, in red.
As of press time there is no set date for when this show is going to occur, however the PRP states that “it seems like it will be fairly soon.” Glenn Danzig, the band’s vocalist will be in the midst of fall tour in October as part of the band Danzing’s 30th anniversary.
“Original Misfits,” are billed as Danzig, bassist and vocalist Jerry Only, guitarist Doyle Wolfgang Von Frankenstein, Dave Lombardo of Suicidal Tendencies(ex-Slayer) on drums and Acey Slade (ex-Dope)on guitars. Danzig, Only and Von Frankenstein were part of the band’s original line-up until their break up in 1983.
The Misfits were originally formed in 1977 by Danzig, Only and drummer Manny Martinez in Lodi, New Jersey. Throughout their original tenure, the band rotated between various drummers and guitarists, with Von Frankenstein lasting as their longest serving guitarist during this period.
After their break up Danzig moved away from the punk rock genre into heavy metal, forming a band called Samhain. After a few years, he decided to change the group’s rhythm section and their name after his last name while maintaining their heavy metal style.
Only formed a short lived Christian-Metal band Kryst the Conqueror for a few years before deciding to regroup the Misfits with Von Frankenstein in the mid 90s. During their break Only had a few legal battles with Danzig and eventually gained the rights of the band’s logo and their right to perform and release new music as the Misfits.
Von Frankenstein was also a part of Kryst the Conqueror and the Misfits regrouping in the 1995 until 2001. After taking a hiatus from this Misfits line-up, the guitarist toured with Danzig during the mid 2000s.
Lombardo was a founding member of the thrash metal band Slayer, gaining fame for his aggressive drumming style. In 2016 he joined the line-up for Suicidal Tendencies.
Slade has worked for numerous projects, beginning his career as a bassist for Joan Jett & The Blackhearts. In addition to these roles he was the frontman for Trashlight Vision and the guitarist for the Murderdolls.
Back in 2016 this line-up joined together on stage at the Chicago Riot Fest, which served as Danzig’s first reunion with the band in over 30 years. After this performance the vocalist stated that he was open to doing more shows the following year.
In 2017 the band played their first performance in their home state of New Jersey, which served as their first performance in the state for over 35 years. This was followed up by show in Las Vegas on Dec.28.
“I know Doyle wants it to continue. I know Glenn wants it to continue. We just have to be big enough people to make it continue,” Only stated regarding this reunion. “And that’s where we’re at. Whatever it takes. We’re going into our fortieth anniversary, so the timing couldn’t be more perfect.”
