Rapper Mac Miller Dead at 26

Malcolm James McCormick who is best known professionally as Mac Miller is an American rapper from Pittsburgh who came on the scene back in 2011 with his debut album, Blue Slide Park. Today, the news broke that the young musician had died at 26. Miller was found dead in his home in the San Fernando Valley in California, this according to the New York Times. His family announced in a statement earlier today but revealed that no cause had yet to be determined.

The statement put forth by his family read, “Malcolm McCormick, known and adored by fans as Mac Miller, has tragically passed away at the age of 26. He was a bright light in this world for his family, friends, and fans.”

Miller was also a producer who went by the alias Larry Fisherman. When he released his first album, it topped the charts making it the first indie record to do so in 16 years. Recently, he released his fifth full-length album entitled Swimming which debuted at #3 on the Billboard charts.

In an interview by Vulture, Miller addressed his mental health saying, “I really wouldn’t want just happiness. And I don’t want just sadness either. I don’t want to be depressed. I want to be able to have good days and bad days.”

Those in the music field poured their hearts out on social media revealing their thoughts on Miller including Chance the Rapper who posted on his Twitter page how Miller had played a significant role in his career expressing that Miller “was one of the sweetest guys I ever knew.”

John Mayer, who appeared on Miller’s latest album by playing guitar on his track, “Small Worlds,” took to his Instagram page posting a blank image with the caption that expressed his feelings: “I’m so sad you couldn’t stay, Mac,” he wrote, “I’m so terribly sad.”

Ariana Grande, who dated Miller for two years before separating in May, disabled her comments on her Instagram page today according to People. The 25-year-old singer had yet to speak out about her ex-boyfriend but began getting trolled on the internet by fans who blamed Grande for Miller’s death. On a video posted via her page, Grande took a short video of her hotel room in the United Kingdom and the caption reading, “Bye London.”

UPDATE (11/5): Three months ago, the world lost Mac Miller. Today, fans of the rapper got a concrete report on the official cause of death which was confirmed today, according to Pitchfork. It has been revealed through the Los Angeles County Coroner’s Office that the cause behind the rapper’s death was due to a toxic mix of fentanyl, cocaine, and alcohol. Miller’s death is being categorized as an accidental overdose.

This past week, a benefit concert to celebrate the life of Mac Miller occurred in L.A. which featured various artists coming together to show love and support including Travis Scott, Chance the Rapper, SZA, Vince Staples, Thundercat, Anderson.Paak, Miguel, Action Bronson, Earl Sweatshirt, Ty Dolla $ign, ScHoolboy Q, John Mayer, and more. The concert was also a way to raise money for the Mac Miller Circles Fund, a nonprofit organization in Miller’s hometown of Pittsburgh that helps support youth arts and community-building programs.
