The Colorado quartet known as DeVotchKa, just released their new full-length album This Night Falls Forever via Concord Records. Along with the release, the band has shared a video for the first single, “Straight Shot.” The video features frontman, Nick Urata performing on stage in a vaudeville-type show for a masked audience. The rest of the band, also in costume, act as musical accompaniment for the theatrical performance. Watch the video below.
DeVotchKa, who once toured with burlesque star Dita Von Teese, formed in 2012. The multi-genre group have created scores for film, TV, ballets and musicals. Earning a Grammy nomination for their work on the film, Little Miss Sunshine. This Night Falls Forever is the band’s sixth full-length studio release. Check out the track list below.
Inspiration for the album grew from a period of self-discovery for Urata and the intimate dynamics of the audience-and-artist relationship. A mishap during DeVotcKa’s last tour with Urata’s microphone, initiated a deep period of reflection for the artist. Urata says, “ You try not to make a big deal out of it, but you don’t recover from that for the rest of the show.” He continues, “It happened more than once on that tour. I was realizing how nearly anyone can sing, almost everybody has the ability, but if you want to perform for people, then you have to fight for it.”
It was after a period of smaller gigs that allowed Urata to connect with audiences, that helped him rediscover his love for his craft. This lead to the creation of the new album. “I realized the motivation is simply how much I love singing,” says Urata, “and I just want to keep this conversation going with people who have connected with our band. It is a rare and powerful thing to connect with people like this, it is the thing the keeps us going.”
